Environmental History Community Action Project: Fall 2013
The Environmental History Community Action Project is both a case study and web project that explores the history of environmental pollution in the state of Michigan. As such, it gives students an opportunity to “do” environmental history, but in a nearby community--maybe even their own. This assignment also provides them with an opportunity to become an activist of sorts, in the sense that they will be doing work from the ground up, at the grassroots level (pun intended). For this assignment, each student researched and wrote a chapter for the class book--a larger research project on the history of a Superfund site. In September 2013, the class voted to investigate contamination in Clare, Michigan, where industrial facilities polluted groundwater supplies. This page is therefore the product of the students. Each entry has been carefully researched and thoughtfully written by a different member of the class.
In addition to the geospatial representations of contamination in Clare located below, you can find companion K-12 lesson plans at the bottom of this page.
